‘Smarter’ tank calibration: Steel and metalworking with Mettler Toledo’s IND360 and RapidCal
Accurate weighing is fundamental to consistent production, product quality and cost control in steel fabrication and metalworking, making regular calibration essential, says Mettler Toledo business area manager for industrial weighing Alni Tatari.
However, he says traditional calibration methods can be time-consuming, costly and hazardous, particularly when they involve manually handling heavy test weights or using material substitution such as purified water.
The IND360 terminal simplifies programmable logic controller integration through native industrial Ethernet protocols and sample code, while providing high-speed, reliable connectivity that supports distributed control, real-time data exchange and Industry 4.0 automation architectures.
“Paired with RapidCal, the IND360 offers a safer, faster and more efficient approach to tank calibration,” Tatari says.
Designed for tank scales with capacities from 1 to 32 tonnes, RapidCal uses a hydraulic system to apply a precise downward test load. Reference load cells measure the applied force against defined standards, while the system accounts for piping effects that can influence weighing performance.
“RapidCal can achieve accuracy of up to 0.1%, with traceability and calibration certificates provided for each service,” Tatari says.
“This supports internal quality systems and helps steel and metalworking operations meet relevant regulatory and compliance requirements.”
Tatari adds that unlike traditional methods, RapidCal does not require bulky test weights, purified water or a calibrated flowmeter. Tanks do not need to be opened, emptied or subjected to extensive cleaning, reducing the risk of contamination and avoiding unnecessary preparation.
The portable equipment can also be used with a variety of tank configurations, including installations where access may be difficult.
“Calibration can be completed in just a few hours, helping minimise production downtime,” Tatari says.
“With less disruption and lower preparation costs, businesses can calibrate more frequently and maintain greater confidence in their weighing data. Avoiding water use and disposal also supports sustainability objectives by reducing resource consumption and waste.”
For steel fabricators and metalworking manufacturers, Tatari says the IND360 terminal and RapidCal provide a practical way to improve weighing reliability without compromising safety or productivity.
“Together, they help create a more accurate, efficient and resilient calibration process for modern industrial operations.”
